Includes a foreword by Spike Lee, the screenplay for the film Poetic Justice (starring Janet Jackson), poetry by Maya Angelou, and sixteen pages of photographs from the set At twenty-four, John Singleton became the youngest filmmaker and only African American to ever be nominated for Best Director (and Best Screenplay) for Boyz N the Hood, his debut feature film. Only a year after receiving such sensational acclaim, Singleton returned to the Hood with Poetic Justice, a movie starring Janet Jackson and featuring the poetry of Maya Angelou. In this vivid document of moviemaking, Premiere editor Veronica Chambers shadows Singleton from the early days of preproduction through the final editing, moving from the streets of South Central to Oakland to Big Sur and beyond. By recording the daily struggles and triumphs of the cast and crew, she captures the unique voice and vision of a singular American filmmaker. "In Boyz N the Hood, John Singleton] was able to capture something very real, an element in black American life, maybe all of American life--the duality of our life, the ambiguity, the schizoid nature of our life. And that is that we are loving people who become destroyers; we are destructive people who become love. Quite often, we are portrayed as things with no redeeming qualities or Martin Luther Kings with no chicanery, no cruelty. John had the courage to give life to these falsehoods."--Maya AngelouBinding Type: Paperback

oh wow
Format: Kindle
I just knew there was something about Cooper! I’m wondering if he’s about to be included but damn I’m glad he’s at least not a rapist and creepy guy, he just got called on assignment and had to go! This should be interesting! She’s gonna run and then what’s his face is gonna grab her. I’m worried! Wow that was a great book and cliffhanger! Loving this!

very cute!
Format: Kindle
This is my first read from this author. The story was very cute with some angsty moments. I loved the way the different MMCs helped the FMC as she recovered from the trauma she endured. It was a great way to highlight their personalities!

Touching OV
Format: Kindle
Really wonderful book. It starts heavy, and slowly lightens up. Some reviews have talked about the FMC not reacting to trauma in a believable way, but her boundless optimism was what she turns to. There is no one, correct way of dealing with trauma, so it didn't come off as flippant. It's a slow burn, with spice coming in the 2nd half of the book. A good read.

cute, wish there was more character growth but definitely sweet
Format: Kindle
Serenity was abused by her parents when she presented as an omega and sold off to someone who starved, assaulted and made her do questionable things while he waited for her heat to come. In a desperate attempt at getting free she was able to run away and was hit with a pack who ended up being a scent match.
While this story was sweet I wanted to see some development of Serenity and Remy’s characters. Serenity was abused and forced to do things from an alpha’s bark, I wanted to see her growth from that but it was basically night and day. Same with Remy, he just miraculously had an aha moment and that was it.
Overall a sweet story.

so engaging
Format: Kindle
Start to finish, I was hooked. The imagery, the emotion, the drama, and the real world application all linked perfectly together with the healing power of love, and compassion. If you never give up hope, all things will work out in your favor. Thanks Serenity for being so strong and resilient. Thanks AJ Shirley for your amazing work. On to book two!
