Ireland's Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University publishes the Famine Folios, a unique resource for students, scholars and researchers, as well as general readers, covering many aspects of the Famine in Ireland from 1845-1852--the worst demographic catastrophe of nineteenth-century Europe. The essays are interdisciplinary in nature, and make available new research in Famine studies by internationally established scholars in history, art history, cultural theory, philosophy, media history, political economy, literature and music.During the peak years of the great famine at least 750,000 men, women, and children died from either starvation or disease. At the same time roughly 350,000 individuals were driven out of their dwellings. Overall the population of Ireland fell from some 8.5 million people in 1845 to around 6.5 million in 1851. This ominous drain of humanity continued at a slower rate well into the twentieth century. Whereas nature could be blamed for the lethal effects of acute hunger or malnutrition, human agency caused much of this devastating loss owing to mass evictions of the poorest tenants and squatters after the agent or bailiff had served them with the dreaded Notice To Quit.
This richly illustrated pamphlet contextualizes the mass evictions by focusing on the ideological and economic factors as well as the role of religious and racial prejudice in prompting owners to rid their estates of what was known as a surplus population. Determined to avoid paying for the maintenance of unprofitable tenants and squatters, landlords sought to avoid insolvency by expelling these pauperized peasants. After destroying their cabins, they consolidated all these small holdings into larger farms or cattle ranches that were rented to solvent tenants. Relying on the laws governing land tenure, letting contracts, and rent, these landlords used the mechanism of eviction to ensure that their estates would become profitable enough to pay for their own privileged way of life.
Whether or not the victims of eviction received private or public assistance to emigrate overseas, the results of these clearances were much the same. Thousands of acres were converted to pasturage in parts of Munster and Connaught and small villages or clachans were abandoned. Only the skeletal remains of stone cottages remained--some of which can still be seen today. No wonder that many Irish contemporaries called the evictors exterminators.

Highly recommend
Format: Paperback
I have read the love languages for kids when my child was about 7 and I found it very helpful and gave me a very different perspective on handling issues that would come up. I purchased this book, more out of curiosity as I don’t have a difficult relationship with my teen but I found it very eye opening. It not only helped me realized things about my own childhood but also a better way to handle issues with my teen. I think this book is good for anyone who wants a closer relationship with their teen, anyone having trouble parenting their teen or anyone who simply wants to be the best parent they can be. This book could be the thing to change your perspective and your relationship with your teen. Don’t hope you and your child can have a good relationship when they are an adult. Be proactive and have one now so that when they do go off to college, they do want to come back home.

I was scared, but…
I’ve heard a lot of questionable stuff about this Bible. I’ve heard even more questionable stuff on out its main translator, but I just don’t see why. It’s really just an easy to read, almost novel-like version of the Bible. It has an explanation in the beginning explaining why it’s not exactly word for word; it has great explanations and commentary to help the reader understand the verse and the translations; it encourages readers to compare with other translations; and it has all “added for context, explanation, or better understanding” words in italics so if your skeptical about anything, you’ll know whether it’s added context. I love it. It’s helped me to read the Bible so much more than I ever have before and it’s strengthened my relationship with God so much because I can not only understand what I’m reading better, but I can understand it AS I read it. Previously, it used to take hours of questions, researching, studying, and learning the history and context of even the simplest verses. I still research and make sure I truly understand what I’m reading, but this has just made it so much easier and also made it possible for me to not have to make an Olympic sport out of reading my bible every time I go to read it.

Good Translation
I have been enjoying the thoughts found in this translation. I use the King James Version for most of my study but this version opens thought to new ideas on the familiar verses. For example, I John 3:1 - KJ: "Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:" Passion: "Look with wonder at the depth of the Father's marvelous love that he has lavished on us! He has called us and made us his very own beloved children".
The Expresso binding is tight. The pages: you can see through where the white, non-typing is on one page and not the back page. Where typing is on both front and back pages there is no problem. The thinness of the pages is good for reading but probably not good for writing notes in the margins. The type is clear and easy to read. The font is small and you will need to use glasses if reading in the middle of the night with low light. I use this as a research Bible so I am not reading it chapter by chapter, therefore, the font is ok. I looked at other stores to buy this book but Amazon had the least expensive price, which I appreciate.
I'm very pleased with this Passion translation.

More intimate
Format: Imitation Leather
If that word "intimate" scares you, or if you get a worldly image in your mind then you are missing out on what God intended. He gave us Jesus so that we could walk in divine intimacy with Him. After all, we are one with Him. If you are after a closer relationship with Him through Jesus and by the Holy Spirit, then this translation will help you get there. Forget the naysayers unless you are just after religion. But if relationship is what you want, then this translation is one of the best out there. Take for example, Psalm 139:5 "You've gone into my future to prepare the way, and in kindness you follow behind me to spare me from the harm of my past." WOW! Thank you Lord! What a GREAT God I have and that I get to be friends with. He IS my friend, but also my Lord and Savior. Look at Colossians 1:19,20 "For God is satisfied to have all His fullness dwelling in Christ. And by the blood of his cross, everything in heaven and earth is brought back to himself--back to its original intent, restored to innocence again! " Amazing what He did for us! Back to His original intent! And one more, Romans 5:1 "Our faith in Jesus transfers God's righteousness to us and he now declares us flawless in his eyes. This means we can now enjoy true and lasting peace with God, all because of what our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One , has done for us. " That makes me want to give glory to Jesus! What a great translation! I love how the author realizes and states "There is no such thing as a truly literal translation of the Bible, for there is not an equivalent language that perfectly conveys the meaning of the biblical text. It must be understood in its original cultural and linguistic settings. This problem is best addressed when we seek to transfer meaning, not merely words, from the original text to the receptor language." Go for it! It will only bring you closer to the One who LOVES you the most. Allow Him to lavish you with love, and then you'll be able to lavish others, undeserving like yourself, with love.

The Word of God - Beautifully Done
Overall: I have been reading the Bible since I could read and this has enriched my understanding. I read this along with ESV daily frequently comparing with NKJV, NIV, NLT, NASB, and WEB. IT IS NOT misleading. Please do your own comparison before following the reviews of others.
This has brought LIFE to me in so many ways. It fully agrees with, substantiates, and fortifies the Good News spoken by Jesus.
Quality: I've used this mid-size brown "leather" copy every day for a year (as of 02-2021), and it's holding up well! See my photos for wear. I toss it in my tote with other bibles and journals, and while it's getting pretty dirty, it's not falling apart.
Size/font: I personally love this size. I have it pictured with an A5 journal for comparison. For someone with good eyesight the font is great. The verse numbers and footnotes are very small. Some of my friends prefer the large print version in order to see more easily.
Pages: The pages are not as thin as other bibles, but not as thick as some. I show the front and back of a page with heavy highlighting. My highlighters are not traditional, they're the Pilot Frixion erasable. Ballpoint pen definitely shows through, but no bleeding.
If you are determined not to like this Bible, then it will be just a book for you. If you are open to reading it side by side with your trusted Bible I KNOW that the Holy Spirit will guide you into new revelation because 1) that's what is promised to us by the Holy Spirit and 2) the Word of God is the Word of God, and is more full of power than any human can mismanage. To tear down the Word of God is dangerous. To allow the Word to transform us through believing it is LIFE!
